Here’s a big thanks thanks to one of the blogs I most look forward to visiting each week: Meltingpotsandothercalamities! If you haven’t’ already checked out her awesome blog please do by checking out her post: here.

The Q & A

1) What is your favorite color combinations? Least favorite?

Favourite: Black, yellow and red.

Least Favorite: ….pretty much anything with pink.

2) Do you have a “to be watched” list? If so, what movie/TV show/anime has been on it the longest?

I pretty much have a list for everything, even though I usually don’t follow through lol.

TV Show: Ringer

Movie: Where the Wild Things Are

Anime: Hachimitsu to Clover and Baccano! (I can’t remember which of the two have been on my list longer lol)

3) Do you prefer coffee or tea, or both?

Definitely tea. I despise the taste of coffee.

4) What is your favorite genre? Your least favorite?

This ones easy.

Favorite: Fantasy anything

Least Favorite: Romance

5) What book/movie/TV show/anime/Webtoon had a 180 twist? Did you like it?

I’m actually drawing a blank on this one. I haven’t come across one in so long. The most recent I can remember is Attack on Titan.

6) Do you have favorite characters who happen to be villains/antagonists?

Of course! I have a very long list for this, but will go with the first 3 that pop into my head:

Cansrel (a sociopathic father) from Fire by Kristin Cashore (no picture).

Hakumen no Mono (a humanly intelligent and cruel yokai) from Ushio to Tora.

Kyoko from March Comes Like a Lion (3-Gatsu no Lion).

All three either gave me such beautifully intense chills…

and/or were such interesting characters in and of themselves.

Image result for march comes in like a lion kyoko

For Kyoko I also have to say, as much I deeply dislike her, she helped provide such a strikingly beautiful contrast to the positive people and relationships in the protagonist’s life that even through all the rage I couldn’t stop the grudging appeal her presence started to bring.

7) Do you prefer humorous quotes, or inspirational quotes? Can you give an example?

…this is a really hard one. I’ll have to say both.

8) Are there any hyped books/movies/TV shows/anime/Webtoons that lived up to the hype?

Image result for vagabondRelated image

200-66 200-53

9) What is an underrated book/movie/TV show/anime/Webtoon that everyone deserves to know about?

This list could go on forever so I’ll just go with the most recent surprisingly underrated story I’ve come across:

Image result for ushio to tora

Ushio and Tora is 2015 show based on the manga published in the 90’s about a young teenager who expectantly comes across a yokai (Japanese monster) pinned to the wall of his basement…I don’t even have the words to describe the crazy adventure that single encounter leads to lol.

10) Have you binged any books/TV shows/anime/Webtoons recently?

The Fallen Kingdoms series by Morgan Rhodes

11) (Shameless advertising time!) Please check my post My Latest Binge Worthy Comics. Do any of these look interesting to you?

YES!! Rise from Ashes and American Ghost Jack being the top two. But to be honest they all look interesting to me lol.

My Questions:

  1. What was the most recent book/anime/show/movie you’ve watched and can’t wait to share with the world?
  2. Do you own any graphic novels/manga?
  3. If you could bring any kind of mythical beast to life and safely integrate it with the world’s population what would it be?
  4. Have any hated/really disliked character(s)? Name your most despised book/manga/graphic novel character(s).
  5. Board games or video games? Which would you find yourself playing more?
  6. Which book/anime/manga/show has recently made the most impact on you?
  7. What would be your dream job?
  8. What was the last book/manga/graphic novel you read (or anime/show/movie) that turned out to be unexpectedly better than you had anticipated?
  9. Do you still remember your favorite childhood book/movie?
  10. Are you a cat person, a dog person, or a no pet person?
  11. What was your favorite and least favorite subjects in school? (clearly I’m running out of questions lol).

3. Mention the blogger who has chosen you.

4. Answer the questions.

5. Mention 9 bloggers/friends and let them know through a comment on their blog.

The Questions:

1. Describe your 2016 in 3 words.

Sloth, procrastination, anime/manga. Lol, I kid. Really it’s more like: Reading, manga/anime, procrastination. That’s much more accurate.

2. Write the name of 2 people that have characterized your 2016.

This is a hard one. Umm… I’ll have to go with Collen Hoover and Hiromu Arakawa. Yes, those are both authors, but their masterful writing left me feeling like my life would never be the same afterward lol.

3. Write the most beautiful place you’ve visited in 2016 and why you liked it so much.

Surprisingly enough it’s a local park nearby that I never knew existed. I’ve always loved forests and such so this took the top of the list. Otherwise, it would be the biggest library in my city….yup, that’s right up there too and for obvious reasons.

4. Write the most delicious food you’ve tasted in 2016.

Easy: The giant oatmeal chocolate chip and peanut butter chocolate chip cookies at The Planet Bakery, as well as the warm chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce with whipped cream at Nata’s Cafe. The large ass chocolate lava chocolate chip cookie with vanilla ice cream and chocolate syrup topping at Red Lobster, and the giant, warm white chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, and a generous amount of chocolate syrup at….whatever that place was called. I LOVED THEM ALL!

200-1

5. Write the event which has marked you more of this in 2016 (even global event).

BookCon! Bookoutlet’s annual box sale! Both are the events I anticipate most each year, so of course, I have to go with that. And if I’m being honest I don’t really remember much of 2016 as things were pretty uneventful outside of that.

6. Write the finest purchase you’ve made in this 2016, and if you want link a photo.

Umm, well, books of course.

Image result for maniacalbookunicorn

I get the feeling there’s a running theme here, lol.

7. Write 3 good intentions for this 2017.

  • Curb said procrastination (something I haven’t started yet but will….soon)
  • Donate rather than return/re-sell my unwanted books
  • Become better acquainted with my limitations and capabilities

8. Write 1 place you want to visit in 2017.

ANIME NORTH!!

Image result for anime north

Of course, this event already passed with me not going, but there is also Fan Expo coming up which I also hope to go to!

9. Write 1 plate/food you want to eat in 2017.

Really, I can’t honestly just list one here….or really at any time I’m asked to name “just one” lol, so I’ll go with a place rather than a specific dish. I’d like very, very, very much to visit an all deserts restaurant at some point this year.

7 More Unicorn Facts

1) My first ever tattoo! I’ve LOVED the look of tattoos so naturally I have always wanted to get one, but have kept putting it off. Seeing as how I’m such an indecisive person, I was afraid I’d quickly grow bored of something so permanent. Now after doing tons of research and thinking I’ve finally figured out what I’d like to do! And am sure I won’t regret my choice.giphy (2)

2) Disney, Pixtar, DreamWorks, etc. I love them ALL. I sometimes get odd looks when I admit this one, but I still love watching animated kids movies. Even in theaters. It helps to have younger relatives to take to the movies.

3) I have always been into various arts and crafts and D-I-Y projects. I often find myself looking up new D-I-Y projects, trying to figure out how to do various arts and crafts (mainly book related) thing myself. Making my own bookmarks, bookends, and bookish bracelets are just some of the things I’ve tried out.

giphy (3) download.jpg

4) As a kid I used to bring just about any stray- a ton of cats- home. This…unfortunately included a couple wild animals (a few baby birds and a squirrel). So even though I was really quiet and usually opted not to socialize with the human race, I quickly became the go-to person in my neighborhood for petsitting and most animal related problems.

5) I’ve got a green thumb. Keeping and caring for all those animals, both stray and pets alike was all quite costly…much too costly. So now, until I’m certain I can financially afford it, I’ve substituted said stray animals and pets with dozens of houseplants.

6) Recently I somehow came to develop a “strong appreciation” (a.k.a borderline obsession) with art books for anime/manga. It makes sense in a way considering my habit of looking up fan art on anime/manga I really enjoyed and lovingly gazing at posters, but I can’t say I thought I’d ever be so into it.

7) Lastly, I am an expert at procrastination. I have tried many times to properly schedule things so I don’t leave it to the last minute, but for unknown reasons it usually doesn’t work out…

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I was nominated to do The Versatile Blogger Award by Sophie at the *A-M-A-Z-I-N-G* Blame It On Chocolate Blog! Sophie nominated me quite a while ago, so most of you may have read what they wrote for this Award, but if you haven’t please head over there and read the post that they did for The Versatile Blogger AwardWell, seeing as how it has taken me so long to get around to doing this post…let’s jump right in!

The 7 Unicorn Facts
  1. It is incredibly difficult for me to pass disorganized and improperly shelved books at the bookstore and be able to resist the urge to rearrange them correctly. Even my bookish best friend sometimes can’t hold back from chuckling at me when I’m reorganizing shelves on one of our many trips to Chapters.                                             giphy (4)
  2. Let me preface this fact by just stating that I do not own a VCR. However, I do own a VHS collection of mostly children movies. It’s mostly for nostalgic purposes…or so I shall say because hilariously enough, I started collecting them after not having a VCR for years upon years. So, yup I’m going to play the nostalgia card on that one!   giphy (3)
  3. I can “play” the Violin, Piano, and Guitar. I can play each with a varying degree of skill and I’m not a prodigy or anything with any of those instruments, but I absolutely love it.                                                                                                                        giphy (2)
  4. Almost everyone I eventually become acquainted with says that when they first met me they thought I was incredibly quiet, unapproachable, and reserved. Although I do have a case of RBF, I’m actually quite “haunted” and have random outbursts of giddy foolishness that most would never have expected from me…well, that is until they really get to know me and then I feel comfortable enough to be my genuine weird, creepy self around them. blwtnbtcmaeugvg
  5. I LOVE DESSERTS! I just love them so much! A lot of people prefer savoury foods over sweet foods, but I’m a definite sweets lover. I have a particularly prominent obsession with cookies. Team Dessert all the way 🙂   giphy (1)
  6. I adore art and creativity. I am not an artist, by any stretch of the imagination, but I love sketching, painting and making drawings of the most random stuff. I have absolutely no skill on a level that I could allow myself to consider myself an artist, but I love creating and illustrating, and it’s one of my longest maintained hobbies.giphy
  7. I have an incredibly huge weak spot for boxed sets of novels, manga, and graphic novels. There’s just something about having a collection, or portion, of a series contained within a uniformed and beautifully decorated box! In my defense…it’s both practical (for storage and preservation purposes) and cost effective to collect a series in a boxset.

How I Got Into Reading Manga and Watching Anime

anime_wallpaper_attempt__yuno_version__by_randyadr-d8r6nzr.jpg
Art by: randyadr

For the first time I’ve decided to do a purely anime related post! I’ll still be primarily talking and blogging about books and novels, but I’ve been thinking about doing something like this for some time now. I only recently (as in a few years) got into anime so figured I didn’t know enough to comment on anything.

After reading so many enjoyable and insightful posts from fellow bloggers like Michel@ Raistlin0903Zbourie, Karandi@ 100 Word Anime, Anime_girls_NYC, and in different ways by all my supportive followers, I’ve been motivated enough to finally give it a try. P.S. Any words in blue have links attached.

Now on to the post! I’d like to start with:

What is anime?

anime_motivation_by_animalunleashed.jpg
Art by Animalunleashed

I have come across various definitions that get into “anime” needing to fit a certain criteria in order to be “real anime”, but I’m not even going to pretend to understand all that well enough to get into any of it. I’m just going with the most basic definition. Anime, from what I understand, is short for “animation”, but when used in this context it exclusively refers to animated material originating from Japan.

How/Why Did I Start Anime?

I grew up watching many of the same anime shows as other 90’s kids: Dragon Ball Z , Pokémon, Digimon, Sailor Moon, and Cardcaptor Sakura. But had no idea what anime was. In fact I spent years thinking anime was…it pains me to admit this… “some weird thing to be scoffed at”, and had no interest in.

200-11Gify

I sincerely apologize to all anime lovers/watchers and of course to Anime!

I was thankfully educated by an old friend and closet anime lover, and learned the truth: I had unknowingly been interested in anime all along lol. Now I’ll do something I generally opt to avoid like the plague, I’ll get a little bit personal:

635844400031298031-2010225925_spongebob-1Gify

I’ve always been into reading (like that scene from Matilda I was that kid that would be carting home a wagon full of books from the library). I had some other hobbies/interests, but spent most of my free time between books and binge watching the latest TV show. With the exception of when I went off to school this remained true until around mid-March in 2014.

I won’t get too into it, but unfortunately I got sick. I had a bunch of inexplicable symptoms and did a ton of tests, but for about a year doctors couldn’t figure it out. For one, I had a lot of trouble focusing on anything, and worst of all I couldn’t write or read more than a few sentences without getting really dizzy. If I pushed things (which considering my love of books I did quite a bit of at first lol), I lost the ability to make sense of any of the words, along with getting a horrible migraine. At first doctors thought it was stress, then possibly MS, then about a year later they thought they found a brain aneurysm. Of course saying this was not the best of times for me is an understatement.

19814547Gify

But lucky for me I remembered the old conversation I had with Closet-anime-fan. So I decided, with nothing better to do since I wasn’t actively going to school and could barely handle most tasks, I’d start on some of the most popular anime series; shows I’d caught glimpses of as a kid, but hadn’t gotten the chance to watch them: Naruto, InuYasha, and Bleach, in that order

To be honest it was a bit of a rough start. I couldn’t understand why Naruto was so popular, but desperately needed something to take my mind off of everything (regular TV shows/movies just weren’t doing it anymore) so kept going. An entire 20-something episodes in my eyes were open. Once I finished those three I immediately went on to other top shonen (young male) shows:

shonen_rocks__by_axelvera96-d7hoht2.jpg
Art byAxelVera96

Needless to say, I was awed. Similar to how I was when I’d come across a mind blowing book series, I found myself wondering, “how did I not know about such amazingness before!? I quickly fell in lust, and moved on to shojo/shoujo (young girl) anime shows:

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Ouran Host Club: art by mixed-blessing; The Wallflower: washue; Fruits Basket: kuro-mai; Skip Beat!: alexielart

I watched a bunch of random shows before getting a bit tired of the young adult atmosphere, and eventually coming across something called seinen and josei (adult male/female) anime shows:

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Samurai Shamploo: drodilla; Darker Than Black: talesvf; Black Lagoon: Hallucination-Walker; NANA: Alicechan

I was shocked to learn anime had so many different genres/stories, and could be so dark/psychological and thought-provoking. I pretty much became an addict for the first year, haha.

What is Manga and How/Why Did I Start Reading It?

Manga, again in the most basic terms from my understanding, is basically Japanese comics. I don’t know about the rest of the world, but they differ from North American comics in both how they are published, and in the fact that they are always (with the exception of special editions/pages) published without colour in black and white.

manga_collage_by_amuntquart-d5p10e0.jpgby amuntquart

Of course, it was anime that had gotten me into manga in the first place. It ended up much like when I had started anime and had yet another shameful thought (it seems I’ve had many of these): “I’ll never watch subbed!” Then I ran out of most of the dubbed shows I had a high interest in watching, tentatively switched to subbed, and once again had my eyes opened. For manga, despite my early reservations, I ran out of patience for waiting on so many anime shows that had been dropped to possibly be picked up again by another company. So to start I went on Bookoutlet, found a couple cheap manga and bought them, because of course it never crossed my mind to just go to the library.

9781421532011_manga-Beast-Master-Graphic-Novel-1.jpg    download.jpg

I wasn’t a big fan of either, namely Your & My Secret, but more importantly not only did the big difference in how to read it go well, but I found I could actually get through it without feeling sick. At this time my mysterious illness had been really improving, but I still couldn’t get through half a book before feeling too sick to continue so I was really hesitate to start. Thankfully my first attempts went well, and I found I could get through a few volumes before I had to call it quits. Soon enough, just like with the anime, I became a manga reading addict for almost a year lol.

I notice I’ve been kinda/pretty vague on details, but will say I eventually I got the good news of the brain aneurysm being a misdiagnosis! Yeah! As things got better I gradually started reading more and more manga at a time. Then slowly and gradually got back into reading regular novels. As you could probably tell from all the novel reviews and posts, I’ve been much better since and will be going back to school later this year or next!

So that is my story on how I started manga/anime, and ultimately how they both helped me deal with all that crazy life stuff. I’ll eventually get around to doing a post on my top favorite anime shows and movies. Thanks for reading! Now on to more anime!

I want to extend a very big thank you to Matthew from Matt-In-The-Hat -who does some awesome posts on manga, video games, and anime- for nominating me for the Sunshine Blogger Award! This is an incredibly belated post in response to this nomination, but I’m doing my best to catch up with all these amazing nominations. If you haven’t checked out his original post where he nominated me, please head over to his blog post here. I’ll be doing a post on the other nomination once I’ve finished catching up with the others.

11 Questions:

1. What kind of trading cards, if you any, do you collect?

A: I haven’t gotten into trading cards since the Pokémon craze as a kid. I’ve seen some pretty cool looking ones recently, but don’t have much of an interest in getting back into it.

2. How do you play video games? On console, portable device (Nintendo 3DS, PS Vita), Smartphone, or PC?

A: I don’t play many video games overall. There is an Xbox in my house as well as a PS, so I’ve picked up a few here and there, and do play quite a few on my phone though.

3. Do you have a favorite game board to play?

A: Umm…I’m pretty out of touch with board games, but I loved Sorry, Chess, and Monopoly (yes I know I just cheated and gave a list lol, my mind will forever insert plurals into these kinds of questions).

4. If you met someone that wants to get into anime, what anime series would you recommend them?

A: It would depend on their tastes, age, and favorite genre, but in short EVERYTHING. Lol, seriously though, I’d agonize about which ones to recommend before ultimately spewing out the extensive list of all my favorites.

But, just in case anyone is interested, I’ve thought out the ones I’d be quick to recommend to complete novices by genre. Though these aren’t necessarily my favorites, I loved them all and overall I’d say…

Fantasy:

47421  Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood or

50337  Moribito – Guardian of the Spirit

**Almost everything I listed here is intended for adults or older teens. There are links leading to where the pictures are from and a short synopsis of each show (trailers, episode count, rating, score, reviews, etc.). Now excuse me while I agonize about all the wonderful stuff I’ve just left out.

5. If the same person asked what anime to avoid, what series would you not recommend?

A: This is much easier to answer! Diabolik Lovers

6. What was the recent movie you seen this year, 2016?

A: Umm… I’m just going to go with the last movie I remember seeing last year which was the live version of The Jungle Book!

7. What’s the recent cringiest moment you have ever experienced (in anime terms or non)?

A: My entire life! Lol, I kid. In terms of anime the most recent is pretty much my entire, very short lived attempt to watch Super Lovers.

8. Do you remember your first follower when you started to blog?

A: Ummm… I have the memory span of a goldfish lol. But luckily for me I can look it up! Hold on a sec…Okay, here we go First follower ever: Urbanpo’E.Tree(s)

First follower since actually blogging is: Dirty Sci-fi Buddha

9. Who do you follow the most as soon as you log in your WordPress account?

A:  Michel’s blog: Raistlin0903. He’s got a lot of amazing movie/TV show reviews, and has some reviews on games that have made me seriously consider getting into more video games outside of GTA, Assassin’s Creed, Dragon Age: Orgins, and a few others.

10. If you could have any food or meal for your last meal, what would you eat? (money is ignored)

A: Desert…just all of the deserts. Literally ALL of them.

200-80

11. What’s the number 1 goal do you plan to do in 2017? It could be about your blog or personal life.

A: I don’t do personal; therefore, blog related. Let me think . . . to actually follow through with all the new changes I’ve made: posts that are not book reviews AND be more present/active on social media.
